Date: 2011-01-09 Blog: Stargate Universe canceled, finally!
As an old Stargate fan, I got really excited when my friend told me that the show has been canceled early in the second season.
The show took the good name of the franchise, and sticked it onto a humorless soap-opera in space. The huge fan base started watching the show, and got disappointed quickly. A new small and loyal fan base has emerged, but it was not enough to keep the series alive killing the entire franchise! People will associate the failure of this show with all the previous series (SG-1 and Atlantis), but it's the bloody boring soap-opera genre that bothers sci-fi fans most.
Most Stargate fans would like to revive SG Atlantis since it still has much to tell, but it's very unlikely that this will ever happen. The remaining fan base eagerly awaits a new series which would be equal in quality to the good old Stargate series.

Every sci-fi fan should know these:
- Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007) - Samantha Carter: Sir, if you don't mind, your wound is bleeding all over my lab.
- Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009) - Dr. Rodney McKay: I prefer lethal injection, although I do have a fondness for the electric chair. Call me romantic.
- Red Dwarf (1988-1999) - Ace Rimmer: Smoke me a kipper! I'll be back for breakfast!
- The Big Bang Theory (2007-present) - Sheldon Cooper: I'm not insane! My mother had me tested!
- The X Files (1993-2002) - Fox Mulder: Not who, what.
It seems there's no good replacement for the Stargate series nowadays. What a shame.

Date: 2010-06-15 Blog: SGU Stargate Universe
After watching the entire first season of SGU, I have to agree with 99% of reviews that this show is crap. I've been a big fan of Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis. I've seen all the episodes many times, but I sure will never watch SGU again.
Since episode one, it's been clear to me that this series is remarkably similar to Battlestar Galactica which I hate utterly also. However, I'm not saying that it is nearly as good as BSG.
When you see O'Neill, Jackson, or Carter take part in the show, you can't help but wonder what convinced them to ruin their famous characters in such a way...

I just came from Avatar, and I gotta say it was awesome. I didn't think anything can top Star Trek this year, but it sure happened.
Normally, I don't get excited over a few special effects, but this was a work of art. It really made me feel the beatiful new world, and the destruction of it. On top of that was a very good story.
All that from James Cameron who brought us Aliens and Terminator.

Date: 2009-09-25 Blog: Video player setup for enthusiasts
- Video Player - Zoom Player or Media Player Classic (MPC)
- Decoders - ffdshow (covers most formats) and optionally AC3Filter
- Splitters - Haali Media Splitter (MKV, MP4) and Gabest (MPC) Splitters (AVI, MPG, MKV, MP4) - these play even corrupted/incomplete files
- Subtitle Filters - VSFilter aka DirectVobSub (DVD, embedded, and external subtitles + advanced styling)
- Renderers - madVR (very high quality renderer with various resampling filters and dithering, GPU supporting shaders required) or Haali Renderer (bicubic resampling using shaders)

- For the highest quality playback, make sure you enable features like 32-bit audio output (or dithering/noise shaping) and post-processing for non-HD videos only (using a preset in ffdshow).
- Absolutely no codec packs! Install only what you need.

Date: 2009-08-29 Blog: How to make the most of your home theater system
Recently, I bought 5.1 500W speakers mainly for my computer since I watch movies and listen to music a lot. Unfortunately, my sound card (Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer) provides only analog 5.1 output and digital stereo output. Therefore, I used the analog output. However, when I connected my DVB-C set top box using S/PDIF coax, it created some interference for my analog connection. After that, I bought another sound card (Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium) which in a way supports multichannel digital output. The thing is that it outputs only a digital stereo signal or Dolby Digital / DTS (when you watch movies supporting it). Luckily, there is a mode called Dolby Digital Live. This mode basically encodes computer sounds or music into Dolby Digital so it can be properly decoded by your home theater. It is a clean way to play your computer sounds from multiple sources (unlike S/PDIF pass-through which prevents other sounds from playing). Now, I can switch between my optical toslink cable (PC) and digital coax (DVB-C) without any problems. The quality difference between the analog signal (D/A converted using the sound card) and the digital one (D/A converted using the speakers far from the PC - the source of interference) is marginal.
